Container Gardening – Quick & Easy Idea

Container Gardening with shade loving Hosta

Container Gardening with shade loving Hosta

I like to do a number of containers with Hosta since they are a hardy shade perennial with beautiful foliage & easy to care for. I was looking for something to dress up my shaded front entryway. I had a black pot and wanted something with yellow foliage.

Here’s this simple container recipe:

-1 black container
-3 Hosta Lemon Lime (1 qt pots)
-Few stones for contrast

In the winter, I put the whole pot in my storage shed and try to water it in February or so because the roots will get rather dry and then change the soil early in the season before the shoots are up.  One year, I forgot about this pot completely and the shoots had turned white and were 3″ tall.  I simply cut these shoots back when I finally placed it outside for the season and they rebounded nicely with their normal color.

This container garden took me about 10 minutes to plant and has given me so far over 3 years of season long enjoyment.  If you wanted to mix and match this up a bit – you can use a bright colored Heuchera such as Berry Smoothie.

A Hoot for Heuchera – 2 Stunning New Coral Bells for the Shade Garden

Two new Heucheras (Coral Bells) really caught my eye last summer – Cinnamon Curls & Blackberry Ice.

Heuchera (Coral Bells)

(L) Blackberry Ice (R) Cinnamon Curls Heuchera

Heucheras are one of my favorite low growing shade plants.  They are great on their own and I love using them to punch up color in my shade perennial garden. Boy, do they do a great job!

There are lots of Coral Bells on the market to select from, so anything new has to be unique, improved and a good garden performer, especially in the heat & humidity of summer. Both have been rigorously testing & trialed in the Proven Winners program.

Heuchera Dolce Cinnamon Curls.  This coral bell has unique copper cinnamon coloring in the foliage. Leaves are very nicely ruffled and the glossy sheen comes out when you give it a couple of hours of sun a day. I love pairing this with a nice blue Hosta.

Heuchera Dolce Blackberry Ice.  How sweet this one is. Eye popping & richly saturated purple & silver foliage will pump up any dull shade corner.

Combination possibilities are so numerous it makes my head spin, but I love how it accents a number of grey foliage plants such as Brunnera Jack Frost and Pulmonaria.

What a terrific shade plant to pump up a dull, dreary part of your perennial shade garden.

You can buy these 2 new Heucheras online at www.GreatGardenPlants.com

Odd numbers, especially the number three is the simplest way to get started when it comes to garden design and it always seems  to work  whether you are designing a garden or redoing your home decor.

Heuchera Cinnamon Curls is such a beautiful shade perennial to work with since it provides almost year round color  I love using this coral bells because it has the most beautiful copper-cinnamon foliage that is both glossy and RUFFLED!  It’s so gorgeous in container plantings because it really holds up well.

In the garden it really makes a statement with Hosta Yankee Blue in the background and edging it up with Carex Evergold.  I’m looking forward to trying a new Carex this year called Everillo – which has beautiful gold foliage all season long. This stunning combination really works because its a combination of foliage in different colors and shapes!
