Blue Zinger Carex certainly has a subtle zing with its tufted long blue foliage and color that last all season long.
Carex are grasslike plants (called sedges) with mostly evergreen foliage as the main attraction. They are increasingly becoming invaluable plants when it comes to landscape design as their low growing habit & narrow leaves compliment well with bold leaved Shrubs, Hostas and many other plants.
Where most Carex like a moist environment, Blue Zinger Carex thrives in a wide range of soil types and exposures. You got to love blue foliage plants that are easy to grow, add instant color, and spreads (in a moderate fashion), while thriving in a dryer site. Think about adding a river of blue beneath a Hedge planting, along a paved walkway, as a “filler” between other plants, or as a mulch-alternative in sun or shade.
An easy Carex to grow that is both deer proof and drought tolerant. You love the instant color of the groundcover with no wait time. Blue Zinger grows 8-16″ tall and will spread 12-24″ depending on the site.

Here is how she did it in 3 easy steps:
1) One wire rack planter
3) 1 – 16” pot of Red Geranium
Lisa simply lined 2 of the SedumSod mats. (Mats measure 10×20″) so they faced outward from the wire planter. (It was a large enough planter – so the SedumSod did not even need to be cut). Once placed, she simply set a large 16”pot of flowering red geraniums in the center. The pot was a perfect size to keep the mats snug against the wire.

I like to do a number of containers with Hosta since they are a hardy shade perennial with beautiful foliage & easy to care for. I was looking for something to dress up my shaded front entryway. I had a black pot and wanted something with yellow foliage.
Here’s this simple container recipe:
-1 black container
-3 Hosta Lemon Lime (1 qt pots)
-Few stones for contrast
In the winter, I put the whole pot in my storage shed and try to water it in February or so because the roots will get rather dry and then change the soil early in the season before the shoots are up. One year, I forgot about this pot completely and the shoots had turned white and were 3″ tall. I simply cut these shoots back when I finally placed it outside for the season and they rebounded nicely with their normal color.
This container garden took me about 10 minutes to plant and has given me so far over 3 years of season long enjoyment. If you wanted to mix and match this up a bit – you can use a bright colored Heuchera such as Berry Smoothie.
